TIM MOOLMAN - Who am I?

I can’t draw and I can’t paint. And I tried, I really tried. I did however develop a love for great filmmaking, great story and that beautiful light. I swapped my surfboard for a skateboard when my mom, sisters and I moved to Bloemfontein and since then my skateboard has travelled with me everywhere. After breakdancing in the 80’s this useless wooden toy was my favourite creative outlet. Something was always missing though and since I can’t draw and can’t paint, I started fixing computers. Then photocopiers and printers and… I got bored.

When I was head hunted for my IT skills and taken to the Isle of Man I determined that I would change my career. I bought a 2mp camera and some books and at the age of 30 started teaching myself photography. I was made redundant from my job and found myself in a new country with no job and zero prospects. I built a portfolio of images and within a year found myself a job as a trainee photographer and the rest is ancient history. I count myself as fortunate to have learnt my trade from experienced, sometimes brutal, but always generous individuals.

I’ve been in this trade for 15 years and have photographed the TT, celebrities, live music, kids, pets, schools, weddings, marches, foot races, bike races, etc etc. Now as I see 50 in the headlights I find myself in love with documentary photography. Simply because of my love for people and all the crazy and interesting things we get up to.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoy looking through my images. As you do remember that I was there, in the thick of the laughter and tears and sometimes blood. Documenting with my camera. Cause I can’t draw, and I can’t paint.
